The main objective of the Chair is to promote an integrated approach to research, training, information and documentation activities in the field of environmental education. The Centre for Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (CRES), where the Chair is based, is an important force in the fields of biodiversity conservation, human ecology, mangrove ecosystem research, agro-ecosystems development and environmental impact assessment. Specific research groups carry out CRES activities in these fields.
The Chair facilitates collaboration between high level, internationally-recognized researchers and the research team of the University and other institutions in the Asian region. CRES offers several courses: a six-month course in environmental studies focusing on ecological approaches to conservation, natural resource utilization and land management; a ten-month course on environmental management and impact assessment; and a three-month course on the human dimensions of upland resource management.
To date, CRES has organized 12 courses and counts more than 300 students among its alumni.
CRES is involved in research and field project activities in the Can Gio Mangrove and the Cat Tien Biosphere Reserves under the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
