EU shark plan
European Action Plan for Sharks Proposed
Measures to help rebuild shark stocks and establish guidelines for sustainable shark fisheries have been adopted by the European Union in its first ever Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks. The soaring demand for shark fins in Asian markets has driven a rapid growth in shark fishing by the EU fleet in the North Sea and Northeast Atlantic as well as in other non-EU waters. The EU fleet now takes about 100,000 tons of cartilaginous species each year under minimal regulation. The Plan bans finning but, in other respects, is just a first step toward stemming the plunder of these highly vulnerable species.
