How big do lobsters get ?
According to the Guinness world records , the heaviest lobster ever caught weighed 44 pounds and 6 ounces . ( Some of the first graders in your school weigh just about the same ) . Lobsters get so big because they grow by molting . Instead of a skeleton , lobsters have a hard , outer shell called an exoskeleton . As a lobster’s body grows on the Inside , it sheds , or loses , the layers of its shell . Lobsters molt about 25 times in the first five to seven years of life . After that , they molt about once a year . Each time , they get a little bit bigger !
