Dolphin saves the day !
On march 12 , 2008 , Moko ,a friendly bottlenosed dolphin that lives off the coast of new zealand , guided two trapped whales to safety . Rescue workers spent hours trying to get the standed mother pygmy sperm whale and her calf back out to sea . New zealand department of conservation worker Malcolm Smith said the whales restranded themselves four times off Mahia Beach : « they couldn’t find their way back past the sandbar to deeper water and then out to sea ». That was until Moko arrived . He led the whales 200 meters through a channel and out to sea .
Dolphins have been known to help humans stuck at sea but this is the first anyone’s heard of a dolphin coming to the aid of other sea creatures . Moko doesn’t communicate the same way the sperm whales do , but he probably understood the trouble they were in . After the rescue , he returned to the beach to swim with local résidents . Moko is a wild dolphin , but he spends so much time swimming and playing along the beach , he was named by résidents .
